아무튼 한다
지난 2019년 알떼에고에서 열렸던 조정민 작가의 사진 전시「My story」에서 우리는 한 편의 영상작업을 볼 수 있었다. 그러나 지하로 옮겨진 알떼에고의 새로운 전시공간에서 열리는 이번 개인전은 애초에 그의 영상작업을 염두에 두고 기획된 만큼 작가의 사진작업과는 또 다른 매력을 발견할 수 있는 기회라는 생각이 든다.
오레오 조정민 작가는 사진과 영상 작업을 한다. 매력적인 흑백의 드로잉도 빼놓을 수 없다. 제책 작업, 각종 디자인, 소소한 가내수공업 제품 제작도 한다. 매일 하고 싶은 것을 한다. 그렇게 할 수 있는 것들을 닥치는 대로 해보다가 때로는 할 수 없을 것 같은 것도 시도하리라. 사실 그의 정체를 규정하는 것은 생각보다 쉽지 않다. 지구인이라는 것은 확실하지만. 아무튼, 오늘도 을지로 인쇄골목에 있는 작은 작업실에서 그는 일을 하고, 담배를 피우고, 책을 읽고, 영화를 보고, 꿈을 꿀 것이다.
물방울 혹은 소행성
자연광이 차단된 지하의 하얀 공간 속에서 작가의 영상작업은 음이 소거 된 흑백의 꿈처럼 몽환적으로 다가온다. 우주처럼 고요한 사각의 프레임 안에서 격렬히 움직이는 이미지는 조용한 가운데 각종 힘들이 난무한다. 예컨대 표면장력, 부력, 원심력, 구심력, 중력, 인력, 혹은 전기 저항에 의한 열에너지 같은 힘들이. 그 속에서 물방울은 배역을 맡아 열연하는 배우처럼 분주하다. 나는 스스로가 물방울이라도 된 기분으로 빠져들어 영상을 지켜보다가 간혹 사운드가 입혀진 부분에선 갑작스레 부여된 현실감에 당혹스러운 기분에 빠지기도 한다. 이제까지 오레오 작가의 사진작업 만으로는 눈치 채기 어려웠던 그의 짓궂음, 기발한 도약, 집요한 시선이 신선하다. 사진은 한 번의 셔터 깜빡임의 결과물이지만 영상은 무수한 깜빡임과 반짝임이 충돌하고 뒤섞이는 것이었음을 다시금 깨닫는다. 달구어진 핫플레이트 위에서 춤추듯이 흩어졌다 합쳐지는 물방울을 따라, 정해진 궤도를 유영하던 소행성이 일제히 자리를 이탈해 지구로 쏟아져 내리는 것 같은 빗방울의 격렬한 낙하운동을 따라, 운하를 흐르는 강물의 반짝이는 수면을 따라 그 깜빡임은 계속 이어진다. 맥락 없이, 불친절하게.
마지막 영상 속의 인물과 풍경들은 어쩐지 내게 학생시절의 사진수업을 떠올리게 했다. 과자상자로 만든 핀홀 카메라로 찍어낸 네거티브 이미지들. 그 반전된 음영은 다시 한 번의 반짝임이 주어져야만 포지티브 음영의 흑백 이미지로 전환될 수 있었고, 네거티브인 채로는 영영 완성이라 불릴 수 없었다. 물론 작가의 영상작업은 추억의 과자상자 핀홀 카메라와는 전혀 다른 방법으로 만들어졌고, 또 의도적으로 네거티브 필름 느낌으로 연출된 것이지만 말이다. 오레오 작가는 왜 세계의 음영을 뒤집어서 보여주고 싶어 했을까. 일상의 풍경을 담고 있는 두서없는 영상에는 반전된 음영과 함께 충분히 비일상적인 기묘한 사운드가 깔려 있다. 그 태연한 불협화음을 통해 작가는 세계의 갈라진 틈 하나를 슬쩍 드러내려는 걸까?
작가가 채집한 세계의 단편斷片들 중에서 여기 네 개의 영상이 어떤 이유로 선택되었는지는 알 수 없다. 심각하고 진지한 연출의도가 숨겨져 있다고 하더라도, 혹은 임의적인 선택의 조합일 뿐이라고 하더라도 무방하리라. 애초에 오레오 작가는 몇 번의 전시를 살펴보는 것만으로는 파악하기 어려운 세계를 가지고 있으니까. 어쩌면 작가 본인도 제대로 설명할 수 없을 것 같다. 뭐 상관없는 일 아닐까. 직관적이고 신화적인 사고의 흐름과 독특한 상상력은 작가의 작품세계를 어떤 식으로든 수면 위로 밀어 올리게 될 테다. 그런 순간을 기다려본다. 그러다 우연히 빛이 주어지면 별처럼 깜빡이면서 어둠에 익숙한 시선들을 사로잡기를.

Bricolage du quotidien
In the photo exhibition「My Story」which was held in Alter ego in 2019, we could see only one video work of Oreo Jung min Cho. However, this exhibition at the Alter ego's new show room was originally designed for her video works. So I think it is an opportunity to discover the different charms of her video work from her photo work.
Usually She works on photos and videos. Strangely attractive black-and-white drawings are also indispensable. In addition to that, she works on publishing, book binding, various design works, and making small handicrafts. She just does what she wants to do. She does whatever she can, and sometimes may also try things that seem difficult to do. In fact, she is a person who cannot be easily defined. Except for the fact that she's an earthian. Anyway, Even today she may work, smoke cigarettes, read books, watch movies, and have strange dreams in a small studio in Eulji-ro Print Alley.
droplet or asteroid
In the white underground space where natural light is blocked, her video work seems like a soundless black and white dream. This image of the square frame which as silence as the cosmic space is filled with various forces. For example, forces such as surface tension, buoyancy, centrifugal force, centripetal force, terrestrial gravitation, or thermal energy due to electrical resistance. In it, the droplets are as busy as the actors who play the roles. I watched the video as if I were a drop of water. Then I was confused by the sudden sense of reality that given to me at the part of the video with sound. It was refreshing because I could feel her mischievousness, brilliant leap and persistent gaze which was hard to notice with Oreo's photo work alone. Photography is the result of a single shutter blink, but I realize again that the video work is a mixture of countless blinks and sparkles. Along the water droplets that scatter and merge on a hot plate, along the violent fall of raindrops that like the asteroids pouring down toward the Earth all at once, along the sparkles on the surface of the river that flows through the canal, the blink continues. Without context and without kindness.
The peoples and landscapes in the last video clip somehow reminded me of the photo class in my student day. Negative images taken with pin-hole camera made of cookie box. The inverted shading image could re-inverted to a positive black-and-white image if I gave another sparkle to it, but the negative image itself could not be called as the completion after all. Of course, the artist's video work was made in a completely different way from the cookie box pin-hole camera, and was intentionally directed to look like a negative film. Why did Oreo want to show us the image of the world which is inverted light and shadow? This video clip which containing the daily scenery is an inverted shading and also has a very unusual sound with it. Is she trying to expose the cracks of the world through that nonchalant discord? As a matter of fact, I don't know why these four videos were chosen from many other videos she took. It would not matter if there was a serious intention of directing or if it was just a combination of arbitrary choices. Because Oreo's world is hard to understand in the first place. So we wouldn’t figure it out just by looking at a few exhibitions. Perhaps the artist herself cannot explain it properly too. I guess it doesn't matter at all. Intuitive, mythical flow of thought and unique imagination will push up the world of the artist to the surface in some way. I wait for that moment. When the light reaches it by chance, it would blink like a star and catch our eyes that were too used to the darkness.
